Diane Musho Hamilton on Creativity, Emotions and the Necessity of Conflict

Sitting before a blank page, waiting to decide on the opening words of this post, I’ve been experiencing a sense of unease, disruption, chaos — in mind and body. And that’s no surprise. It turns out that the space of creativity — and communication in general — is tinged with uncertainty, and that brings with it some rather challenging psychological and physiological upheavals. It’s interesting to learn about the evolutionary basis for “fight or flight” and how we’ve evolved in such a way that allows us to accomodate the gushing of adrenaline and cortizol without actually bolting from the room of lunging at a fellow human with our claws out. More to the point though… meditation is quite helpful in allowing us to not only accomodate our emotions, but to ride them in such a way that the intelligence of these energies can be harnessed and employed in the service of creativity. Jason Siff Discusses Recollective Awareness Meditation

To learn more, please click here Jason Siff was a Buddhist monk in Sri Lanka in the 1980s when he started developing Recollective Awareness Meditation. In 1996, he co-founded the Skillful Meditation Project and has been a full-time meditation teacher since then. He also trains teachers in Recollective Awareness Meditation in retreats throughout the U.S., Canada and Australia. His first book on meditation, Unlearning Meditation: What to do when the instructions get in the way, was published by Shambhala Publications in 2010. But, how can we do that? Sometimes it happens in an unavoidable way–we have a near death experience, or we see someone die. Every once in a while, a big death moment happens. Also though, as we know, impermanence marks every passing moment. It is the ever-present truth, which we seem to be quite in the habit of ignoring. Every breath is a death. Every meal, relationship, day and night, have their ends. Perhaps if we could wake up to impermanence in a more consistent and profound way, we could live and appreciate our lives more fully and go through our end-of-life “big” deaths more gracefully. How to Stay Open and Awake to Reality in all its Richness

At first, it’s a challenge just to sit with our minds. Even if we do come to enjoy relaxing with ourselves alone on the meditation cushion, bringing that confidence and equanimity into our daily lives and relationships is challenging because it is in our interactions with other people that we are most likely to close down. The experience of openness is our natural state, so why are we not open all the time? Acharya Susan Chapman, author of The Five Keys to Mindful Communication and Greg Heffron, co-director of the Mudra Institute will teach the Green Light model of mindful communication at Shambhala Mountain Center, March 8th to the 10th.
